What do communities want?

This meeting was a follow-up meeting to a one-day conference sponsored by [CHEJ] and held on October 21, 1983. The purpose of this first meeting was to bring victims of toxic waste exposure face to face with staff of environmental groups and Congressional committees sponsoring legislation on "Victims' Compensation" so that these community leaders could directly relate their needs and concerns. Secondarily, several options for compensation, the tort system and a proposed administrative system were evaluated based on a list of 31 "needs" defined by the community leaders who attended. The purpose of the second meeting was to bring community leaders together in order to define goals and princ'Tles for what communities need and want as compensation for exposure to toxic chemicals. Leaders from nine victim communities attended.
